Organizing & Membership Associate

General Job Description
The organizing and membership associate is responsible for implementing a measurable field plan to increase both activist and volunteer involvement and organizational membership to expand support for pro-choice policies and elected officials in Colorado. This position is responsible for using grassroots-organizing, volunteer-recruitment and -management, and membership-development strategies to grow the organization’s activist base to achieve legislative and electoral victories. As the public face of the organization during coalition activities and in-community events, the organizing and membership associate will be responsible for educating diverse constituencies about issues related to the full spectrum of reproductive health issues addressed by the organization, including: comprehensive sexuality education, barriers to contraceptive accessibility, strategies to increase healthy birth outcomes, and attacks on access to safe, legal abortion.

The organizing and membership associate will work closely with the political director to meet the organization’s civic engagement and electoral objectives to defeat anti-choice ballot initiatives, maintain pro-choice majorities in the state Legislature, and enact pro-choice policy changes at the state, city and county levels. This position also will collaborate with the fundraising and events associate and the executive director to coordinate activist-engagement and membership-recruitment and -retention efforts.

This position is based in Denver with travel to assigned areas of the state. The organizing and membership associate is a full-time, salaried, exempt position that reports to the executive director and manages seasonal, full-time field and organizing staff. A flexible schedule, including weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel, is required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • (60% of time) Develop and implement community-based programming to engage activists throughout the year, including:
    • Using online organizing, phone, and in-person contact methods to recruit and manage activists to participate in annual Roe v. Wade anniversary, Pro-Choice Lobby Day, Choice Celebration & Auction, and civic engagement and electoral efforts;
    • Expanding NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado’s grassroots lobbying capacity using the Constituent Lobby Network;
    • Planning in-community events to increase public awareness about the organization’s priorities by securing event locations, managing event budget for food/beverages, and recruiting attendees;
    • Using Facebook, Twitter, and Web-based e-mail platform to engage activists;
    • Maintaining and updating appropriate sections of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado and ancillary Web sites using proprietary content management systems (CMS); and
    • Implementing a targeted voter-contact and get-out-the-vote program that includes managing temporary field staff and recruiting for and managing phone banks, door-to-door canvasses, and member-to-member outreach efforts.
  • (15% of time) Develop and manage a pro-choice leader-in-training program that incorporates campus organizers, interns, and other volunteers.
  • (15% of time) Develop and implement a membership-recruitment and -retention program in collaboration with the development and events associate and executive director, including:
    • Identifying target audiences through which to build membership based on organizational priorities and issue-based activities;
    • Determining benefits of membership and most effective membership-recruitment strategies for each audience;
    • Creating membership-retention opportunities that integrate seamlessly with activist-engagement efforts; and
    • Carrying out print, online, in-community, and other communication efforts to recruit targeted audiences for membership.
  • (5% of time) Represent the organization within multiple coalitions, including serving on sub-committees and holding positions consistent with organizing, civic-engagement, and membership-development goals.
  • (5% of time) Collaborate with counterparts in allied organizations to better position NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado as a trusted partner and leader within Colorado’s pro-choice, civic-engagement, electoral strategy, and policy communities.
  • Ongoing:
    • Use database systems to track volunteer activities, membership-development efforts, and voter-contact activities; and
    • Supporting other aspects of the organization’s programmatic priorities as needed.

Qualities of Ideal Qualified Candidates

  • Strong commitment to full reproductive freedom – must be pro-choice!
  • Unbridled enthusiasm for building relationships with activists on the phone, in-person, and online
  • Knowledge of what it takes to win a ballot initiative, candidate election, or other electoral campaign using grassroots or political organizing
  • Experience recruiting, energizing, managing and tracking volunteers
  • Ability to maximize excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Sense of humor that balances professional demands
  • Motivation and direction that requires minimal managerial oversight
  • Strategic analysis skills that enhance your ability to learn quickly
  • Desire to be involved “on the ground level” through strategic planning -- and flexible enough to amend all the plans as the situation merits
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Web-based e-mail platforms, Internet research, and familiarity with PC computing environment
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual proficiency (preferred but not required)

Online Organizing Intern

Organizational Overview

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The online organizing intern will work with the political organizer to develop a comprehensive, sustainable online organizing program to strengthen the statewide pro-choice movement. Responsibilities will include:

·         Establishing and maintaining a presence on social networking sites for NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado

·         Creating and updating a blog for NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado

·         Maximizing internet technology to build Colorado’s pro-choice political activist base, such as online contests, surveys, YouTube promotions, text-messaging campaigns, etc.

·         Writing and sending regular e-mail communications to distribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado activist communities

·         Tying online activism to offline advocacy

Qualifications
Passionate commitment to full reproductive freedom — must be pro-choice! Applicant must be have strong written communication skills, a snappy writing style, and a sense of humor. Online organizing experience preferred, including knowledge of popular social networking tools, developments in netroots organizing, and familiarity with
Colorado’s political blogosphere. Applicant must be hard-working, dependable and self-motivated. Must be able to commit up to 20 hours per week.

PUBLIC POLICY INTERN
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The public policy intern will work with the political director and political organizer to manage NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado’s public policy program. Responsibilities will include:
  • Researching Colorado law regulating reproductive health and rights
  • Identifying opportunities to revise existing statutes to expand access to the full range of reproductive health care options
  • Identifying potential new ally organizations to advance reproductive health care policy in Colorado
  • Facilitating coalitions related to women’s health care and reproductive freedom
  • Updating training materials for 2009 Constituent Lobbyist Network

Qualifications
  • Passionate commitment to full reproductive freedom — must be pro-choice!
  • Applicant must have strong written and oral communication skills and a desire to use the political process to advance public policy.
  • Familiarity with Colorado's constitution, Colorado Revised Statutes, and Lexis-Nexis a plus.
  • Applicant must be hard-working, dependable, self-motivated and comfortable conducting extensive Internet research.

PUBLIC/MEDIA RELATIONS INTERN

SUMMARY
NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado seeks self-motivated individuals to develop and implement an aggressive earned-media/public relations plan to raise public awareness about the reproductive health needs of Colorado women. The successful applicant(s) will have a desire to pitch creative angles to community media to increase awareness about the work of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado.  Multiple interns will be selected to fill the needs of this position and to delegate duties/responsibilities based on individuals’ interests.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Public/media relations intern(s) will work with the political and public education and research directors to dplan and carry out an earned media plan for the duration of the internship. Responsibilities will include:

·         Identifying earned media opportunities based on organizational activities.

·         Writing press releases, blog posts, and other content as necessary.

·         Conducting targeted media outreach.

·         Developing a media database.

·         Planning and implementing earned-media events (i.e., press conferences, community forums, etc.)

·         Providing additional support for the general activities of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado.

 

Qualifications

·         Passionate commitment to full reproductive freedom — must be pro-choice!

·         Applicant must have strong written and oral communication skills.

·         Individual must have an interest in using media relations to raise public awareness about reproductive health.

·         Applicant must be hard-working, dependable, and self-motivated.

·         Individual must have Internet research experience.

·         Prior public relations/media experience a plus.

·         Must be able to commit approximately 8-10 hours per week.

Prevention First Colorado/NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation Intern

Prevention First Colorado is a program developed by NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation to address certain reproductive rights issues, such as birth control access, comprehensive sexuality education and lowering the rates of unintended pregnancy in the state and therefore reducing the need for abortions. Prevention First Colorado has highly developed research, public policy and education programs. Currently we are looking for an intern with whom to share this experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 
The Prevention First Colorado intern will work with the Public Education and Research Associate to run an updated Emergency Contraception research project. Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Design a research program based on the organizations research projects of 2005 and 2008 to survey pharmacies and clinics throughout the state & assess their knowledge of EC and the rate at which they dispense EC, among other data.
  • Program will include: 
    • A survey and phone call script,
    • Partnerships with NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado’s volunteer base,
    • Creation of a database to store and sort all information collected, and
    • A written report of findings

 

Qualifications
  • Passionate commitment to full reproductive freedom — must be pro-choice!
  •  Applicant must have strong written and oral communication skills
  • Applicant must be hard-working, dependable, self-motivated and comfortable conducting extensive research projects.
  •  Must be able to commit approximately 10-15 hours per week for a full semester.
