Souter to Retire, Roe Hangs in the Balance
It's official: Supreme Court Justice David Souter, one of the four liberal-leaning justices on the bench, will retire at the end of the court session this summer. The nominee President Obama selects to replace him will determine the fate of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision and the right to choose. It doesn't get more important than this - it is critical that President Obama select a nominee with a well-established record fully in support of the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose. There is no room for compromise. Anything less than a 100% pro-choice nominee would jeopardize the health, welfare and lives of American women.

We have already seen the devastating consequences of Bush appointees Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. We cannot afford a replacement for Souter who wavers even slightly in her or his position on privacy and choice. Anti-choice extremists are already mobilizing in anticipation of a nominee they won't like. We've already seen extremists block the nomination of moderate pro-choice appointments like Kathleen Sebelius. You and I both know that anti-choice forces will stop at nothing to block a fair-minded nominee who supports women's rights and health. That is why we are preparing a campaign now to make sure the President nominates, and the Senate confirms, a 100% pro-choice nominee. We will mobilize our network of over 10,000 members to conduct petition drives, contact their lawmakers, and distribute flyers and information on the significance of a Supreme Court vacancy and the need for a justice who respects this country's long tradition of personal freedom.
