The radical anti-choicers are at it again. This time they want to change the Colorado constitution to say that every fertilized egg has the right to life, our courts are open to every fertilized egg, and that fertilized eggs have the right to acquire, possess and protect their property. Their stated purpose:
TO MAKE ALL ABORTION ILLEGAL.But their ballot initiative will have an impact on more than the right to choose an abortion. If they succeed in calling fertilized eggs “people” in the Colorado constitution, there would be other consequences: The pill, the NuvaRing, injectibles like Implanon and Depo-Provera, IUDs, and Plan B -- which act in part by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall – could become illegal in Colorado.
Before this fringe anti-choice group can abolish our rights to make personal choices about everything from the best form of birth control to the right to have an abortion, they must get their initiative on the November 2008 ballot. To do so, they'll have to gather more than 75,000 signatures.
