As hospitals merge and change ownership, a growing number of Coloradans are losing access to essential reproductive health care services in their local hospital. Case in point: With the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, KS, becoming the operator of the Exempla Good Samaritan and Exempla Lutheran health care facilities in the metro-Denver area, the hospitals began adhering to the Ethical & Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. These directives prohibit or severely restrict provision of abortion; contraceptive counseling, drugs, devices and procedures; and assisted reproductive technology.
