Birth Control Methods

PERMANENT (SURGICAL) METHODS

The following are surgical methods that make you incapable of getting pregnant or, if male, incapable of impregnating a woman. They are generally considered non-reversible.

Tubal Ligation (Female Sterilization): Surgery performed by a physician in which the fallopian tubes are cut, burned or blocked. Tubal ligation can be done as an outpatient procedure and is over 98 percent effective.

Vasectomy (Male Sterilization): Minor surgery performed by a physician in which the vas deferentia (the tubes that carry sperm) are cut or blocked. Vasectomies are usually done as an outpatient procedure. Vasectomies are almost 99 percent effective.
