Covering the Cost of an Abortion

Modified: 09/28/2011

Ending a Pregnancy: Abortion

COVERING THE COST OF AN ABORTION

In Colorado, public funding (Medicaid) is available for abortion only in cases of rape, incest and/or to save the life of the woman.

A first-trimester surgical or medical abortion can cost an average of $400 in Colorado. As a result, many women and girls with limited funds must delay their abortions as they try to put together the money they need. This situation can force women into more complicated second-trimester abortions (abortions performed after twelve weeks).

Help is available. Individual abortion providers can often offer financial assistance. There are also two community-based abortion funds located in Colorado that can assist low-income women in covering the partial or full cost of an abortion.

Community-based funds

THE FREEDOM FUND, FIRST UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF DENVER
In 1984, the First Universalist Church of Denver established the Freedom Fund. Its purpose is to extend religious freedom and equality by offering assistance to women who have few resources.
