WOMEN’S HEALTH CARE AND RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS EXPRESS CONCERNS ABOUT BEAUPREZ STATEMENT

We are deeply concerned about Congressman Beauprez’s statement, in an interview on KCFR on August 28, which either showed an alarming lack of knowledge or was a willful attempt to mislead the public. Rather than throw out incorrect and uninformed statistics, we wish that Congressman Beauprez would join with us in promoting proven, effective policies in reducing the number of abortions in Colorado. Greater access to health care, comprehensive sex education, and access to emergency contraception are all programs that have been proven to reduce abortions. Unfortunately, Congressman Beauprez gave out incorrect information that unfairly singles out the African American community. With his ignorance on the subject, Congressman Beauprez has provided yet another example why health care decisions should be made by a woman, in consultation with her doctor, her family and her conscience, not by the government or politicians.
