Inside the Dome: October is Abortion Access Action Month
Seen any good flicks lately? Use the month of October – which is national Abortion Access Action Month - to mix your pro-choice values with popular culture by checking out recent films that deal with reproductive rights, unintended pregnancies, and abortion. Read on to find out which films are pushing these issues into mainstream discourse. Our staff favorite, Knocked Up, was released on DVD in late September. The film provides a comedic take on unintended pregnancy – and provides a solid foundation for discussing "what if?" with your peers, significant other and children. Lake of Fire, with an October 3 release date in the U.S., is a jarring documentary from writer/director Tony Kaye (American History X). The film explores the medical procedure of abortion and the politicization of the issue in the 34 years since Roe v. Wade was decided. This film presents the intricacies of abortion as a complex and very personal matter. Tentatively scheduled for its U.S. release in late October, Bella won the People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. The film looks at the impact of an unintended pregnancy. On the horizon: 2007 Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or winner 4 Luni, 3 Saptamini si 2 Zile / 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which tells the story of a woman who, facing an unintended pregnancy, has an illegal abortion in Nicolae Ceausescu’s communist Romania. Already screening in Europe, the film’s U.S. release date hasn’t been publicized. Also during Abortion Access Action Month, take a few minutes to read up on the Hyde Amendment, federal legislation that was enacted 31 years ago to prohibit federal dollars from being used for abortion services. A number of pro-choice, women’s rights, and health care organizations have joined together to call for an end to the Hyde Amendment, which disproportionately affects low-income women.
