COLORADO GROUPS LAUD SEN. SALAZAR’S LEADERSHIP & COURAGE

Posted: 03/15/2005

Colorado Coalition for Fair Justices Thanks Senator for Standing Up To President on Re-nomination of Flawed Judges

Denver – In a letter to Senator Salazar, the Colorado Coalition for Fair Justices, an alliance of Colorado-based civil rights, human rights, labor, environmental and women’s organizations, applauded the Senator’s courage and foresight and thanked him for imploring President Bush to reconsider his re-submission of a handful of controversial judicial nominees who have already been rejected by the Senate.

In its letter, the Coalition writes, “On the behalf of our quarter million members and supporters throughout Colorado, we write to applaud your March 1 request of President Bush that he withdraw his most controversial federal judicial nominees, particularly those who have already been rejected by the Senate.” The Coalition adds, “If the President fails to honor your request by withdrawing these controversial nominees, we urge you to stand firm in your opposition.”

Although the President has long heralded himself as a “Uniter,” his decision to re-nominate these rejected judges betrays a disinterest in consultation and disrespect for the Senate. His re-submission of these rejected judges undermines the Senate’s Constitutional judicial obligation to “advise and consent” of the President’s judicial nominations. What is more, by re-submitting this slate of recycled nominees, the President is forcing a bitter partisan battle that threatens to stall the Senate’s important work.

Of President Bush’s more than 200 judicial nominees, only a handful have been stopped because they would make poor judges and are either unfit or unqualified to serve lifetime appointments on the federal bench. They are out-of-the-mainstream ideologues that will roll back critical rights and protections Coloradans and all Americans have worked hard for and count on like the protection of our civil rights and liberties, safety in our workplaces, clean air and safe water, privacy and equality.

By asking the President to withdraw these flawed nominees, Senator Salazar has shown vision, leadership and courage that all Coloradans can be proud of.
