Groups push Salazar to request nominee's papers
Denver Post Anne C. Mulkern Denver Post Staff Writer August 5, 2005 Washington - Two activist groups often critical of the Bush administration are asking Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar to push the White House to release more documents related to Supreme Court nominee John Roberts. People for the American Way and the American Civil Liberties Union say they plan to hold a news conference today at the state Capitol in Denver to put pressure on Salazar, a Democrat. The groups believe the documents dating from Roberts' service as a government attorney may reveal more of his views on issues he would likely face as a justice. Salazar's position in the so- called Gang of 14, a group of senators who united to preserve the right to filibuster judicial nominees, puts him in a position to exert influence on the White House, said Catherine Han Montoya, spokeswoman for People for the American Way. "We want to put pressure on him to demand that all the information be released from the White House. We don't think that enough information has been released ," she said. "We hold the senator's feet to the fire and say that he is to be held accountable to the people of Colorado about his leadership on this issue." Salazar has not yet said how he'll vote on Roberts. His spokeswoman said Thursday he was "monitoring the situation." "Right now, the (Senate) Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the matter, and he's not on the Judiciary Committee," spokeswoman Jen Clanahan said. She would not say whether Salazar believes the White House has released enough information.
