GOVERNOR OWENS TURNS HIS BACK ON WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE
April 13, 2006 Contact: Kathryn Wittneben, NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Office: 303-394-1973, ext. 12 Mobile: 303-514-9230 GOVERNOR OWENS TURNS HIS BACK ON WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE OWENS VETOES HB 1212, A BILL ALLOWING WOMEN INCREASED ACCESS TO BIRTH CONTROL “Governor Owens has turned his back on the women of Colorado with his veto of H.B. 1212, a bill that would provide increased access to birth control. If the Governor was truly serious about reducing the need for abortion, he would support this common sense, common ground approach to preventing unintended pregnancy,” stated Kathryn Wittneben, Executive Director at NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado. “The Governor’s reasons for vetoing this bill are merely smoke and mirrors. The medical community, including Colorado Medical Society, the Colorado Gynecological and Obstetrical Society and the Colorado Pharmacists Society, agree that increased access to emergency contraception is good policy that benefits the well-being of their patients. Eight states allow emergency contraception to be provided directly to women by pharmacists, illustrating a strong precedent for this approach to helping women prevent unintended pregnancy,” continued Wittneben.
