COLORADANS STRONGLY ENDORSE OVER-THE-COUNTER ACCESS TO EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

FDA reconsiders application to widen access to Plan B as a result of public pressure

Denver (Aug. 2) - Kathryn Wittneben, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado, released the following statement on the recent announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that it will reconsider an application by Barr Pharmaceuticals to approve emergency contraception, also known as Plan B, for over-the-counter sales:

"Coloradans are tired of politics trumping women’s health care. Increased access to emergency contraception can reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in Colorado, therefore reducing the need for abortion."

Wittneben continued, “Women deserve the full range of health-care options so that they have tools and resources they need to help create healthy lives, healthy children, and healthy families. We hope that the FDA stops playing politics and starts relaying on science when making decisions about women’s reproductive health care.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado has collected more than 10,000 signatures from Coloradans this summer alone, urging the FDA to end the three-year delay on approving this safe, effective form of birth control for over-the-counter access.
