NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado to Commemorate 34th Anniversary of Landmark Roe v. Wade Decision Upholding Women’s Right to Privacy to Making Personal Health Care Decisions

DENVER – Monday, January 22, 2007, will mark the 34th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding women's right to privacy when making personal health care decisions, including whether to have an abortion. To commemorate the decision, NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado, together with partnering organizations, will host the following events:

About the Speakers

Marcia Ann Gillespie is a recognized leader leader, contributor and inspiration in the areas of African American culture, feminism and international women’s issues. Ms. Gillespie currently serves as Professor of Diversity in Residence for the Johnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute at Bennett College for Women in North Carolina. As former editor of Essence and Ms. magazines, Ms. Gillespie made her mark as a driving force behind two of America’s most influential women's publications. Named "One of the Fifty Faces for America's Future” by Time magazine, Ms. Gillespie is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Matrix award from New York Women in Communication, the Mary MacLeod Bethune award from the National Council of Negro Women, and the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Crystal Plati is executive director of Washington, D.C.-based Choice USA, where she has directed Choice USA’s dramatic transition in both program and appearance to better reflect the diversity of youth leadership in every aspect of the organization. From the makeup of the Board of Directors, to the diversity of participants in regional and national trainings, to the organization’s strategic collaborations and partnerships, Choice USA has redefined what it means to be "youth-led" by developing young leaders and funneling them to positions of leadership across the progressive movement. Ms. Plati is a dynamic leader in national progressive politics working on behalf of reproductive justice and across social issue movements. She is a member of the Advisory Council of the Women’s Information Network and on the board of directors for the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center.

Reverend Dr. Ignacio Castuera is the first national chaplain for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and currently serves at St. John's United Methodist Church in the Watts area of Los Angeles. Rev. Dr. Castuera is a graduate of the School of Theology at Claremont University, where he studied and wrote about the problems of violence and the patriarchal worship of a mother goddess in Mexican culture. He was elected to three Jurisdictional Conferences and to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church and has served on the National Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission and on other boards and task forces as a representative of his denomination. Rev. Dr. Castuera was also the first Mexican-American district superintendent of the United Methodist Church in the Los Angeles District and went on to become the pastor of Hollywood United Methodist Church. During his 11 years at Hollywood United Methodist he transformed the church into a center of the growing movement aimed at creating a positive religious response to the AIDS pandemic.

NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado (NPCC) is the political action arm of the pro-choice movement in Colorado. NPCC has more than 30,000 supporters statewide and works to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive health choices, including preventing unintended pregnancies, bearing healthy children and choosing legal abortion.
