Bush's Anti-Birth-Control Appointee to Family-Planning Post Resigns

Pro-choice activists call on the president to appoint new leader who represents Americans' mainstream values

Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, released the following statement in response to the reported resignation of Eric Keroack, Director of the Office of Population Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Now is the time for the Bush White House to show the public it heard Americans' call for an end to divisive attacks against women's freedom and privacy. The president should take this opportunity to appoint a medical professional who actually believes in birth control to lead the nation’s family-planning program. Birth control is not a controversial issue. Americans of all political persuasions support women’s access to contraception and family-planning services."

Last year, NARAL Pro-Choice America issued an alert to its member activists, asking them to contact HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt and urge him to reconsider the Keroack appointment. In less than 24 hours, 29,190 member activists had taken action.
