SANTORUM VICTORY CONTRADICTS COLORADO VALUES

NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Executive Director Highlights Santorum’s Extreme Anti-Birth Control,

Anti-Abortion Record Following Win in Colorado Republican Caucus

Denver (Feb. 7) – Emilie C. Ailts, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Inc., released the following statement regarding GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum’s victory in the Colorado Republican Caucus this evening:

Colorado voters have a solid history of supporting candidates who believe personal, private decision-making – such as whether or not to use birth control to prevent unplanned pregnancies, or whether or not to use in-vitro fertilization to create the family they envision, or whether or not to access safe, legal abortion -- should be made by individuals. Moreover, Coloradans resoundingly reject politicians like Rick Santorum who green-light political interference in women’s access to a full spectrum of essential health care services.

“Mr. Santorum may have won the support of a narrow segment of voters tonight, but his extreme anti-choice policies are out-of-touch with the vast majority of Coloradans. Case in point: Mr. Santorum’s support for granting constitutional rights to fertilized eggs is absolutely contrary to that same type of measure that Colorado voters have twice rejected by a 3-to-1 margin.

“The bottom line is, Mr. Santorum's extreme anti-birth control, anti-abortion ideology – which he shares with anti-choice politicians like state Senator Kevin Lundberg, who has called birth control an ‘abomination’ - doesn't hold water with your average Coloradan. For all his talk of family values, it’s clear that Rick Santorum’s values are not Colorado values.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Inc. (NPCC) is the political leader of Colorado’s pro-choice community. NPCC has more than 30,000 supporters statewide and works to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive health choices, including preventing unintended pregnancies, bearing healthy children and accessing legal abortion.
