Prevention First

WHAT IS PREVENTION FIRST?

In Colorado, 4 out of every 10 babies born are the result of unintended or unwanted pregnancy.1 If you factor in unintended or unwanted pregnancies that result in miscarriage or abortion, the percentage is even higher. The state of Colorado has set a goal of reducing this figure to 30% by 2010.2

NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation facilitates the Prevention First Colorado Coalition, a diverse group of organizations working on women's and teens' reproductive health issues. The Coalition works to empower Colorado women and girls to make responsible, informed decisions to reduce unintended pregnancy and to make choices that promote healthy lives, families and communities. Why prevention first? Simple: By preventing unintended pregnancy, Colorado can lead the nation in improving the economic self-sufficiency and health for Colorado women and girls without denying women access to safe, legal medical care. This can also help to reduce the need for abortion.

  • Reducing unintended pregnancy
  • Empowering women to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases
  • Ensuring women have access to the full range of reproductive health services
  • Increasing the likelihood that women receive appropriate prenatal care when they become pregnant
  • Promoting responsible health practices within families that can be passed on to future generations
  • Reducing costs for health care services that are related to preventable conditions

About Prevention First Colorado
Prevention First Colorado is a coalition of non-profit organization convened and facilitated by NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Foundation that works to support the reproductive health of women and girls in Colorado. The Coalition is conducting groundbreaking research examining women’s attitudes toward contraception and why women who don’t want to get pregnant don’t use birth control. The Coalition will use this important information to address policy and education issues in Colorado to help ensure that every child born in Colorado is a wanted child and every woman and man in Colorado has the resources and tools to make responsible, informed choices about having a family.

In today’s charged political environment, important debates about effective reproductive health care policies sometimes get lost in divisive and emotionally charged rhetoric. Prevention First Colorado presents a common-sense, common-ground approach to reproductive health. Learn more at www.PreventionFirstColorado.org.
