If you are considering starting a family, the following organizations can offer advice, information and a network of support groups. In addition, financial help is often available for low-income families.

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children)
WIC is a nutrition program for pregnant women, breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum, non-breastfeeding women up to six months postpartum, and infants and children until the age of five.

The WIC program provides nutrition education, including breastfeeding support, nutritious foods, screenings and referrals. WIC participants must meet certain financial requirements and be "nutritionally at risk" to qualify for the program. Colorado WIC operates approximately 125 clinics throughout the state.

To find a local WIC program or to get more information, contact WIC at 303-692-2400 or
1-800-688-7777 (English and Spanish), or visit http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/ps/wic/wichom.asp.

The Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+)
CHP+ is health insurance coverage for low-income children (eighteen years of age and under) who do not qualify for Medicaid. CHP+ provides medical benefits such as inpatient and outpatient hospital, physician, prescription drugs, dental and mental health care. To have a free application mailed to you, please call 303-692-2960 from the Denver metro area or
1-800-359-1991 (toll-free) from elsewhere in Colorado.

Families First
Families First provides support and education to any parent willing to ask for help. A free children's program accompanies all groups and classes. The Family Support Line, available from 10 am to 10 pm daily, offers referrals to community resources and a listening ear for any parent needing to talk.
